CNN —Skin cancer is by far the most common form of cancer in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society. As we head into summer, what do we need to know about the chance of developing skin cancer? In addition, those who are at increased risk for skin cancer should ask a dermatologist if they should receive regular skin exams. These include personal or family history of skin cancer, history of precancerous lesions such as actinic keratoses, certain genetic disorders such as xeroderma pigmentosum and history of immunosuppression. And it’s not only people who are fair-skinned who can have skin cancer; individuals of all colors, including those with brown and Black skin, can develop skin cancer.

2024’s safest sunscreens for summer and year-round

The annual report provides a database of products by brand and type, while also breaking them down into the top recreational sunscreens, the best daily SPF (sun protection factor) and the safest sunscreens for babies and children. Many of the safest choices will be mineral-based instead of chemical-based sunscreens, said Emily Spilman, EWG’s healthy living science program manager. Mineral sunscreens work by physically deflecting and blocking the sun’s rays, as opposed to sunscreens with chemicals that absorb UV rays and release heat as they break down. In 2019, oxybenzone was an ingredient in 60% of all sunscreen products tested by EWG, dropping to 30% in 2022. By 2023 and again in 2024, the chemical was used in only 6% of tested products, which included sunscreens and daily moisturizers and lip balms with sunscreen protection.

A May 1985 report in the journal Nature was alarming. High above Antarctica, a massive hole had opened in the ozone shield that protects life on earth from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. The finding confirmed what scientists had warned of since the 1970s: Atmospheric ozone was being broken down by the wide use of chlorofluorocarbons, chemicals known as CFCs, which were found in aerosol sprays, refrigeration and air conditioning. Just over two years later, dozens of nations meeting in Montreal signed an agreement to significantly reduce CFCs, which the Environmental Protection Agency estimated would prevent 27 million deaths from skin cancers. “This is perhaps the most historically significant international environmental agreement,” Richard E. Benedick, the chief United States negotiator, said at the time.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States; 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Blevins was diagnosed with melanoma, which is a rare type of skin cancer — only about 1% of skin cancer cases — but accounts for a large majority of skin cancer deaths. However, if people do have suspicious skin spots or any other symptoms concerning for skin cancer, they should talk to their primary care doctor or dermatologist. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer, but it can be easy to miss, or mistake for another skin issue. Doctors often discover the cancer during a routine skin check, said Dr. Melissa Piliang, chairman of the dermatology department at Cleveland Clinic. In a Facebook post this week, the health and fitness personality Richard Simmons announced he had been treated for basal cell carcinoma. It was only after seeing a dermatologist that Mr. Simmons was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma. While it can be difficult for patients to identify, basal cell carcinoma — which is estimated to affect several million people in the United States each year — is very treatable.

Amid the graphic images, fierce polemics and endless media criticism that have dominated my social media feeds since the war in Gaza began late last year, I noticed a seemingly bizarre subplot emerge: skin cancer in Israel. “You are not Indigenous if your body cannot tolerate the area’s climate,” one such post read, highlighting outdated news coverage claiming that Israelis had unusually high rates of skin cancer. In the context of the ongoing slaughter in Gaza — more than 28,000 people dead, mostly women and children — such posturing may seem trivial. But even, or maybe especially, at this moment, when things are so grim, the way we talk about liberation matters. In this analysis, there are two kinds of people: those who are native to a land and those who settle it, displacing the original inhabitants.

Standard recommendations for vitamin D level intake start at base level, "assuming that you're not starting with a deficiency," Mieses Malchuk says. You can find out your current vitamin D levels by bringing it up to your doctor. Not every doctor will automatically check your vitamin D levels during a regular blood panel, so aim to ask during your next physical "if you've never known what your vitamin D levels [are]" and "you're a brown person," Perkins says. Kim Kardashian recently stirred up controversy for having a tanning bed in her office. Light therapy can help with psoriasis, but tanning isn't the same thing and increases cancer risk. Kardashian spoke out on X (formerly Twitter) after Allure critiqued the tanning bed featured in her brand SKKN's office, which she showed off in a recent TikTok tour. Tanning beds primarily use UVA light, which causes not only damage, but also skin aging (including the development of wrinkles) and increased risk of skin cancer, according to the MD Anderson Cancer Center. The World Health Organization classified tanning as carcinogenic, or cancer-causing, and studies suggest it can increase your odds of developing certain types of skin cancer by 58%.

At the same time, those nations that have yet to enrich themselves on fossil fuels have every right to develop their economies as others have. It is possible that clean energy may soon outcompete fossil fuels. Passing the 1.5 degree mark is merely a symptom of the underlying condition: the continued burning of fossil fuels. The successful effort to save the ozone layer is a case in point. The ozone layer is expected to fully recover to pre-1980s levels within decades.
